Samba Batucada

I used to have a CD with this song on it (by a different group) and I always really loved the parts where there is one person leading the entire group on one drum. Not only is this a really cool way to do improv, but I feel like that would be a fun way to do drum circles. The whistle, to my knowledge, serves to sort of call attention to the group, like "Alright, enough jamming, back to business everyone!" I just really love this song and think it can teach us a lot about drumming and the way we conduct drum circle.

  1. I love this! This is an excellent representation of a drum circle, but its not really a circle! What it is is a bunch of people all gathered together, playing drums/percussion and having fun and feeding off of each other. That is exactly what we do and I fell this just spells it out so well.

  2. THis is really cool. I feel like working with other things other than drums would be really cool and add some interesting dynamics to our circle because I love how this sounds. I also love how you can tell the people just love moving and making music and are just really experiencing the music.

I feel like we could learn a lot about how these people are experiencing the music rather than trying to make it work. It just seems like we all are a bit of perfectionist I think we could learn a little bit of just trying things and stopping worrying about messing up and just flowing like these people are. Awesome video.

  3. I like what Catherine said about "experiencing the music rather than trying to make it work." Losing oneself in the music and living in the moment is what music is about, right? Theres a magic in how you can feed off everyone's energy. If one doesn't enjoy what they play, why would anyone else enjoy what they're playing? I'd love to see this video done live, it would be amazing to feel the buzz in the air that we sense just watching the video.

    1. Dude, think about standing in the middle of that group with your shoes off. The vibrations would shake you. How cool would THAT be?!

  4. I love this. I love the atmosphere of the ensemble, and I love the way the drum circle is conducted. What I love the most, however, is that these people show that music can transcend more than just one of our senses. Not only are we hearing the music here, but we are also seeing it in the performers. I love it.

  5. I LOVE THIS! This is some serious music making. The beat and rhythm are so INTENSE! I got up and danced. There was no way that I was going to give that opportunity up. I love the leadership in this, and again, the simplicity in these instruments is extraordinary.

  6. Hanae, I also really like the "follow the leader" approach for these groups. It makes the music seem a lot more like a conversation and less like a bunch of people all trying to talk over eachother or say the same thing at once.

  7. This seems like a perfect example of what Catherine was talking about in our last class about taking what musical material you're given and building off of it. Very very cool. I also like how the whistle is used, it's a bit more piercing than the human voice.

  8. This is really cool! It reminds me of a time at the University of Louisville when I was at a Percussion camp and we paraded around campus with Brazilian instruments. Which was really cool. I hope during our drum circle we can do some call and response like they did in the beginning and during breaks, that is also really important.
